How the money moves

Where your money goes

When you give, your gift goes to the OpenCharities Foundation, an independent grantmaking fund. The Foundation then allocates money to the initiatives you support. Here is each step, in plain terms.

Your gift, step by step

Three steps, from the moment you give to the moment an initiative gets funded.

01
1

You give to the Foundation

Your gift goes to the OpenCharities Foundation. You can share a preference for which initiative you would like to support. That preference is a wish, not an instruction: the Foundation decides where money is allocated.

02
2

The Foundation pools and allocates

Gifts are received into the Foundation and allocated in monthly cycles. The board decides which initiatives receive funding, guided by the preferences donors have shared. 100% of your gift goes to the cause.

03
3

An initiative gets funded

The Foundation funds the chosen initiatives so they can do the work. As the pilot moves real money, the flow from the Foundation to each initiative becomes traceable, so you can follow where funding goes.

We use our network the other way around

Most platforms hand you a fundraising page and ask you to bring the donors. We are building the opposite: a fund that goes looking for people with good ideas and backs them.

How initiatives are chosen

Funding decisions sit with the Foundation board. We hold a high bar, and we are honest that the full selection criteria are not published.

Strict, board-decided selection

The board reviews initiatives and decides which ones the Foundation funds. The bar is deliberately high. We weigh the strength of the idea, the people behind it, and the impact it can create.

Guided by donor preferences

When you give, you can tell us which initiative you would like to support. The board takes those preferences into account, while keeping the final allocation decision with the Foundation.

We do not publish the full criteria, and we will not pretend a decision is automatic when it is a judgement call. As the fund grows, we will keep sharing how the work is going.

Proof you can follow (coming soon)

We want you to be able to follow the money, not just take our word for it. The Foundation receives gifts into a public, multi-sig wallet on Gnosis Chain, and the plan is to make each allocation to an initiative traceable on-chain. This part is still aspirational: there is no money-moved record to show yet. Once the pilot moves real funds, this is where you will be able to follow what went where.

Coming soon

On-chain proof arrives with the pilot. Nothing to show here yet.
